Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Expansive Clay under Drying–Wetting Cycle

Expansive clay is one of the most widely distributed soils in world. Due to its rich content strongly hydrophilic minerals—such as montmorillonite—expansive exhibits substantial swelling and shrinkage properties, overconsolidation. The formation process undisturbed expansive has a long complicated geological history innumerable drying–wetting cycles, resulting special internal structures. In this study, mud-to-natural-consolidation deposition was simulated using saturated mud-remolded sample preparation device, then, soil under certain consolidation pressure prepared. Subsequently, effects stress cycle on mechanical properties microstructure were examined through uniaxial compression experiments, K0 plate experiments soil, sample. results showed that completely broke natural structure with structural characteristics remolded being restored extent after cycle. This not only reduced void ratio sample, but also changed compressibility water retention characteristics, revealing role atmospheric cycles overconsolidation state providing theoretical basis for understanding their characteristics.
